Marine Corps Marathon Race Day Fueling Guide
Hey MCM Runners!
First off – huge congratulations on signing up, training hard, and fueling smart with your UnTapped MCM Training Pack. You’ve put in the miles, the sweat, and the prep. Now it’s almost go time – and we’re so excited to be with you every step of the way.
MCM runner and UnTapped Maple Fanatic Pro Jonathan Ladson (@fogell_mcloving) has dialed in a fueling plan built with pure maple power. He’s here to help you take all that hard work and make sure you cross the finish line strong.
Don’t skimp on fuel as you train for Race Day!
A packet 15 minutes before a training run and every half hour during the training runs ensures you make the most out of every session and gets you used to the fuel you will be taking on race day.

Pre-Race Fueling
Race morning breakfast: Eat a good meal early (this might mean eating between 2–4 a.m. depending on wake-up time).
Waiting time: Expect travel, security lines, and time waiting in the Runner’s Village so bring snacks for that wait time outside of what you plan to consume while racing.
I like to pack extra :
UnTapped Waffles → light, pocket-sized, ideal about 1 hour before start.
UnTapped Mapleaid packets → lightweight and easy to mix with water; you don’t have to carry too much water with you to start – you can mix these with water available in the Runner’s Village.Bring your own tossable water bottle (in case other containers aren’t available during your wait).
Golden rule: Stick to foods you’ve trained with—no surprises on race day.
During the Race
Energy gels during the race:
Take your first gel within the first few miles.
Then one gel every 30–40 minutes – Bonus: UnTapped gels go down so smoothly, there is no need to chase them with water.
UnTapped Energy Gels are ON COURSE (Mint, Coffee, Salted Cocoa, and Salted Citrus) at ALL food stations:
Mile 14 → Hains Point after the Blue Mile
Miles 18–19 → After passing the Capitol Building
Mile 24 → Long Bridge Park in Crystal City
Remember – food stations don’t begin until after the halfway point (mile 14) so fuel up before the race begins! If you have a preferred gel it’s always a good idea to carry extras with you!
UnTapped will be at Booth #315 at the expo selling our entire lineup so you can stock up ahead of time.
Golden Rule and Training Reminder:
Nothing new on race day. Train with the gels that will be available on-course.
