Sports Nutrition Labels and Quality Control
UnTapped CEO Doug Brown Chats with Ultra Coach Jason Koop
In light of recent controversy around sports nutrition labels and credibility, ultra-running Coach
Jason Koop hosted CEO and co-founder Doug Brown of UnTapped – the all natural athletic fuel
company – on his podcast The KoopCast.
Brown started the conversation by sharing how UnTapped came to be. With a focus on
simplicity and all-natural ingredients, UnTapped’s product line of “gels” was born. Comprised of
pure maple syrup, real fruit juice, and sea salt, UnTapped is about as natural as it gets. As the
business has grown over the last decade, Doug explained how the company has prioritized and
performed testing for product labels and new recipe creation, what is regulated, and by whom.
“It’s very opaque and not regulated,” stated Brown when talking about nutrition label regulations.
“In the US there is no government entity that is going to come in and say ‘No, your nutrition facts
are wrong… you’ve got to police yourself.”
Doug went on to share how UnTapped performs consistent quality control throughout the
development of products and testing at multiple points in the processes. To listen to Doug’s full
breakdown and explanations, tune in to the full podcast labeled “Sports Nutrition Labels and
